Finca del Monasterio.

Silió.

A house with a century of history.

Construction began in 1897, and the remodelling was completed by architect Elías Ortiz de la Torre. This neo-traditional palace is part of Cantabria’s architectural heritage and reflects the quiet elegance of the grand residences of its time. Its walls, proportions and spaces reveal an approach to architecture in which beauty and function lived in perfect balance.

Memories of the palace

On the front façade, a coat of arms is surmounted by a helmet with mantling. Its quartered shield bears the arms of the Ortiz de la Torre family. Inside the same portico stands a sculpture of Our Lady of Mount Carmel.

The architect played an important role in shaping the regional architecture of Cantabria, alongside figures such as Leonardo Rucabado, Javier González de Riancho, Gonzalo Bringas Vega, Valentín Lavín del Noval and Deogracias María de Lastra.

Neo-regionalism remains relevant in its search for characteristically Spanish values within regional traditions. Elías Ortiz de la Torre contributed particularly to the design of the solanas, eaves and balconies typical of Cantabrian architecture, features also adopted by other architects in the movement.

The Estate

The estate is arranged into woodland, garden and meadow across an area of nearly 6,000 m². The woodland brings together more than 30 trees of significant botanical value, including Tibetan cedars, lime trees, ginkgos, yews, magnolias, Japanese maples. The structured garden, finished with local natural stone slabs, leads to a meadow bordered by cypresses.

The palace garden

In his designs for Cantabrian houses, architect Elías Ortiz de la Torre paid particular attention to gardens, boundary walls and outbuildings. At Palacio La Gloria, he arranged the grounds into woodland, a garden structured with paving slabs, a former pelota court now used as a greenhouse, and a meadow. The height of the boundary wall and the details of the gate leading to the main house are also notable. The heraldic entrance portico has been fully restored.

Alongside the main house, the former caretaker’s house has been turned into a library with more than 200 books.

The estate also includes a building intended for a gym, designed by the architect himself, reflecting the character of Cantabrian architecture and his cultural outlook.
